Most of my efforts in the past week went to fixing the shape of the head and face, and researching different methods for creating hairstyles that don’t necessarily use hair effects in Maya.
I have decided to go with a slightly longer hairstyle that eliminates the view of ears. Something like this, but straighter if need be:
