Assignment 12

This past week has been really rough so I’m not as far along as I’d like to be:

Animation is going well, I need to smooth some of the blendshapes so it flows better.

I’m having issues with the hair and I still need to texture the head, but I’m focusing on animation first.

I have some tests of my lighting setup done, I haven’t tried it with the hair shadows yet.



Assignment 11

Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to capture most of my progress due to a crisis last night, but I have been working on it- I can upload a playblast tomorrow or Wednesday.

The basic chin movement is blocked and the tweak cluster weights are painted pretty well, the next step is refining lip motion to say the words.

Assignment 9

Final-ish recording. Might add a sigh at the beginning?

How is the inflection and the speed for clarity?


Modeling-wise I added the inside of the mouth and positioned the teeth.

I’ve decided to go with nCloth-driven hair, but I’ll set that up near the end so I definitely have time to refine the rig and animation before focusing on that.

Rig so far with some poses:

I UV’d the head and neck, but can’t figure out if there’s a simpler way of relaxing the mouth than to move it point-by-point.  Does that even matter if I’m using Mari to texture?

Assignment 8

Most of my efforts in the past week went to fixing the shape of the head and face, and researching different methods for creating hairstyles that don’t necessarily use hair effects in Maya.

I have decided to go with a slightly longer hairstyle that eliminates the view of ears. Something like this, but straighter if need be:

Assignment 7 – Cruella de Vil beginnings

For the final project, I am modeling a version of Cruella de Vil from the book/movies 101 Dalmatians.

Her response to “where did it all go wrong” will be, “I only wished to have a coat made out of puppies! I mean honestly, what’s so wrong with that?”  (I timed it out at about 8.5 seconds).

My first pass of modeling with no textures looks kind of lumpy without ears or hair, but the general shape is there:

The next step is to add ears and refine the eyes, lips and nose. I also need to build the inside of the mouth and tongue. I am happy with the teeth, they are not shown because they are in position in the mouth for a relaxed neutral jaw pose.


All images except for the models were found through google image searches, mostly for ” Curella de Vil,”  “modern hairstyles,” and “resting bitchface” (because I didn’t want a happy looking neutral)

Assignment 6 – Lighting

Using the blendshapes from the expressions assignment, I made 14 different lighting setups in Maya.  These are my favorite expressions from each setup.

Assignment 5 – Happy Clusters

This assignment is the same as the last, but with key-framed clusters rather than blendshapes.

I determined that the ‘hæ’ sound would be the same viseme as they are combined in the movement when I say ‘Happy’ in the mirror, and the ‘p’ and the ‘i’ sounds would be their own visemes.  It is possible to make the ‘h’ and the ‘a’ sounds separate, but that sounds incorrect when added to the rest of the word.
